What is carpal tunnel syndrome treatment?

At Elevé, we will always strive to find non-surgical, non-invasive options for treating CTS first. However, most of these options only prevent further pain and do not address the issue at its core. Because carpal tunnel syndrome is progressive, it’s important that you do not delay your treatment. The sooner you undergo your surgery, the more strength and dexterity you will be able to retain. The procedure takes a few hours and you will be able to go home the same day. After surgery, you will begin physical therapy to condition your hands and achieve a return to normalcy.

How is carpal tunnel syndrome treatment performed?

During your initial appointment, our team will delve into your symptoms and assess your level of pain by performing several tests, which may include an EMG (electromyography) and a nerve study.

First, we will place a splint on your wrists to be worn daily. Second, a corticosteroid injection may be administered to temporarily relieve symptoms. After these preliminary approaches are exhausted, we will then recommend a surgical option. Surgery is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. An incision is placed within the hand, stretching about one inch in length. Through this opening, the doctor is able to divide the transverse carpal ligament. Sutures are placed and then removed within about one week.

Who makes an ideal candidate?

If you have been suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome and have not found relief through non-invasive options, a surgical approach may be able to restore your quality of life. Clients should be of sound mind and body, non-smokers, and realistic in their goals for improvement. We will conduct an in-depth examination and medical review during your consultation for carpal tunnel treatment in our Wausau and Stevens Point offices.  We can answer all of your questions and concerns at that time.

 What happens after my treatment?

Most clients can return to work or school within about 10-14 days, provided they are not engaging in repetitive tasks that could ignite inflammation. If your job entails repetitive motion, you may need to wait as long as 6 weeks to resume your trade. The doctor will prescribe pain medications after your surgery and will make personalized recommendations for physical therapy that can help expedite your recovery.
