What is a DEXA scan?

A DEXA scan is an enhanced form of X-ray technology. The DEXA scan is the gold standard in body composition analysis. DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a precise, exact way to scan your body and provide accurate data about your body composition. DEXA scan results also provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures.

Whether you’re fine tuning your body and tracking changes in body fat percentage or rehabilitating from surgery, a DEXA scan gives you the details you need to track changes and improvements and design the plan to get the body you want.

What information will a DEXA scan provide?

Body weight and BMI calculation are both considered basic metrics of overall health. However, these can be misleading because the makeup of an individual’s body can be unhealthy even at a low weight. Identifying an optimal balance between lean muscle and body fat provides a much better insight into achieving a healthier future.

Recommended by health professionals around the world, the DEXA scan provides detailed information about the following:

  • Body fat percentage (a more accurate representation of bmi)
  • Lean muscle mass
  • Visceral fat
  • Relationship of muscle to bone density
  • Body fat percentage in hip to waist ratio
  • Limb to limb comparison

I was surprised by the Dexascans and how detailed they are. I love that it can measure your body and show you the progress you are really making, not just by going off of a scale. The programs are tailored to you versus a canned program to allow for better personal results.

What happens during a DEXA scan and when will I get the results?

A bone density scan is a quick and painless procedure that involves lying on your back on an X-ray table so an area of your body can be scanned. No special preparation is needed, and in many cases you may leave your clothing on (you will need to remove any clothes that have metal fasteners, such as zips, hooks or buckles).

You will need to keep very still during the scan so the images are not blurred. A large scanning arm will be passed over your body. As the scanning arm is moved slowly over your body, a narrow beam of low-dose X-rays will be passed through the part or parts of your body being examined.

One of the many benefits of a DEXA scan is that it only takes about 10 minutes. Once it is complete, you will get the results immediately.

Dexa Scan Benefits

While it is used very effectively for older patients concerned with bone loss, the DEXA scan is also popular with athletes who want precise data to help them develop the most effective fat loss/muscle-building strategy. A few of the benefits are:

  • Identifies exactly where you are storing fat
  • Identifies and evaluates dangerous visceral fat hiding around the organs
  • Determines if fat or muscle is causing weight fluctuations
  • Allows you to track your progress and monitor changes with an easy-to-use app
  • Determines bone loss, risk fractures and density for those who participate in high-impact sports

Who Should Get A DEXA Scan?

The DEXA scan can be taken by anyone, young or old. There are a number of indications for a DEXA scan for patients.

  • Evaluation of fitness level (BMI, lean body mass, fat loss)
  • Risk factors for bone loss
  • Identification of muscle imbalances or potential compensation patterns
  • Assessment of recovery from surgeries such as acl tear, achilles rupture or rotator cuff injury
  • Tracking of body fat percentage changes
  • Assessment of bone density
